Lapel / Lavalier For Speech

Lapel microphones are referred to by many names such as lavalier/ clip-on/ tie/ lav mic and are used for recording or broadcasting live speech wirelessly connected to a mixing desk via a radio mic system. As their many names suggest, the mic is small enough to subtly clip onto most forms of clothing in the chest region which makes them a favourite for TV presenters/ interviewees or live conference speakers that wish to have their hands free without the sometimes undesired appearance of a headset mic.

For live speech purposes, the lapel mic is best used as a subtle volume boost for someone who is good at projecting their voice. They require a skilled live sound engineer to avoid feedback if you want it to work as well as a standard handheld microphone, especially if you are miking up a softly spoken person.

For indoor recording purposes, they are definitely the most discreet way of close miking someone. Without the worry of generating feedback in a live setting, they are quite straightforward for videographers to operate and can plug straight into their camera depending on the camera input connector. It can often be a struggle to avoid unwanted wind noise if attempting to use a clip-on mic in window outdoor conditions.
